Birmingham has had a long relationship with the British motor trade and April will see nationwide deliveries of the first entirely new Mg motor car to be built there in over fifteen years. Car produce and Birmingham have a long history, with the Longbridge plant having been the home of car manufacturing in the Uk since 1906. The revival of the Mg brand is welcome news to the habitancy of Birmingham as it heralds a new dawn of prosperity and employment.

The new Mg6 is the powered by the N-series engine, which is a third generation of the K-Series engine advanced by Mg-Rover before their collapse. The original K-series engine was controversial; despite being economic, head gasket failures come to be a base fault noted surrounded by Rover drivers, and repair of the engine could range from £350 to over £1000. It's notion that exaggerated press reports were a contributing factor towards the decline of the previous motor giant and one of several reasons the enterprise declined in latter years. Rumours throughout the latter part of 2010 recommend potential supplementary distribution deals with Vauxhall, who were quick to dismiss the suggestion, clarifying that whilst they support with some global operations there were no plans for new Mg motors to be exhibited within Vauxhall showrooms in the Uk. Any way distribution is handled, it's notion that Mg is back as a major player in the car commerce and the venture located by Saik has truly put Birmingham back on the map.

In World War 1 and World War 2, the factories were dedicated to the output of munitions. Before, during and after these conflicts, Austin cars would be man-made from the same factories and machines. These same factories would be used under the names Austin, the Morris Motor Company, Bmc, British Leyland, the Rover Group, and Mg Rover Group. It was under the possession of the Phoenix Consortium that Mg Rover Group went into administration, resulting in the loss of more than 6000 jobs.

The remaining assets of Mg were purchased by the Nanjing Corporation a matter of months after the enterprise went into receivership. Not until 2008 would the plant resume manufacturing cars, and in the intervening years large areas of the Longbridge plant were demolished. 2008 marked the return of the Tf range of cars, a model previously advanced and man-made under the Mg Rover Group. The Mg6 is the first entirely new car to enter output and was built with skill and care of local engineers, many of whom were part of the previous Mg Rover Group. Indeed, it's felt that this car is a logical improvement of the plans being worked on by Mg Rover at the point of their demise, and Mg have made clear efforts to state this is a British car, despite the Chinese investment.

The demise of Mg Rover could have been catastrophic for the employees, and at the time it was. With six thousand habitancy seeing for work, these were very difficult times. The return of Mg isn't just good news for motorists and Mg/Rover enthusiasts; with it comes the promise of new work and prosperity in a successful city. Whilst jobs with Mg may not be at the same levels as there was during the company's peak, the surrounding areas have been put to good use with many new businesses ventures. Its notion this will originate up to ten thousand jobs over the next few years. There was even hint in 2009 of a change to Pinewood Studios being built in the area.

In addition to the redevelopment of the Longbridge Plant, Birmingham itself continues to develop. Birmingham's Big City Plan is an ongoing twenty year project to help the city regenerate so it may be one of the top twenty most liveable cities in the world. Longbridge is but a small part of this process, and all the work put into the city and surrounding areas is helping to make Birmingham not only great place to live and work, it's manufacture it one of the best locations in the world.
