Dreaming Lhasa Film Notes [by Human Rights Watch] On October 1, 1950, the Chinese government sent troops into Tibetan areas to make good its pledge of "liberation". Nine years later, in March 1959, armed resistance to Chinese rule culminated in a massive uprising in Lhasa, Tibet's capital. The Dalai Lama, along with more than 100000 fled across the Himalayas into India. Tens of thousands died. In the northern Indian town of Dharamsala, Tibetans formed a government-in-exile. The US lent some assistance to Tibetan resistance fighters. For a decade beginning in the mid 1950's, the US CIA assisted Tibetan resistance fighters with arms and training in guerilla warfare before parachuting them into Tibet to meet up with their compatriots. Few survived. In 1969, the US CIA abruptly closed the program. More than forty-five years later, Dharamsala is still the official seat of the government-in-exile, and, as the film demonstrates, much else is unchanged at the same time much has changed. In Tibetan settlements in India, Tibetans still struggle to earn a living. Monks and nuns still flee Tibet, risking their lives, to find in India the religious education unavailable in Tibet. Others, some 2500 a year, make the dangerous journey to see the Dalai Lama; to leave their children to learn what they cannot learn about their culture, their history, and their language at home in Tibet.
